Catania was repeatedly destroyed by the eruptions of Etna and by earthquakes, in particular the devastating one of 1693, and each time it was reborn, rebuilt in the splendid Sicilian Baroque style of the 18th century that today earns it UNESCO recognition. The city was the birthplace of the great composer Vincenzo Bellini, to whom the opera house and a pleasant city park are dedicated.
